Submitted by Joyce Matthys:
The January meeting of the Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club will be held on Sunday, January 13, at the Sanibel Community House, 2173 Periwinkle Way.
This month’s speaker is Bob Wasno from the FGCU Vester Field Station. Mr. Wasno will illustrate how broken hockey sticks and reducing water pollution, which may seem unrelated, have been combined to clean up coastal waterways by creating artificial oyster reefs through a collaborative program (Rink2Reef) between FGCU’s Hockey Clubs and the NHL’s Green Initiative Program.
Before the speaker, there will be refreshments and a silent auction of high-quality seashells beginning at 1:45 pm, followed by the presentation at 2:00 pm. The meeting is open to the public.
A big “Thank-you” to Dick Willis for donating the shells and to Tom and Linda Annesley who worked tirelessly with Joyce Matthys sorting and dividing literally hundreds of shells for the auctions at our next three meetings. The proceeds from the auctions go to the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum’s “Mollusks on the Move” outreach program.
