Red Tide Talk at Shell Club Meeting – February 3 2019 at Sanibel Community House

Because of more delays in the renovation at The Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum and because the Sanibel Community House was already booked for our usual meeting date, we have had to move our February meeting up one week to Sunday the 3rd.

Eric Milbrandt, Marine Laboratory Directory at the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation, will be the guest speaker at this meeting. The title of his presentation is Red Tide Monitoring and Research at the SCCF Marine Laboratory.

The Red Tide event that started in Nov. 2017 reached its peak during July and August of 2018. This algae bloom by a marine dinoflagellate will be explained and the ecological consequences to fish and biodiversity will be discussed. The presentation will highlight the research and monitoring being conducted at the SCCF Marine Laboratory. The laboratory was given a $4,000.00 grant from the Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club in 2018.

The Silent Auction will begin at 1:45 with the meeting beginning at 2:15. PLEASE NOTE – THE DOORS TO THE BUILDING WILL NOT OPEN FOR MEMBERS OR THE PUBLIC BEFORE 1:45!!!

Only those people setting up for the meeting will be allowed in the building prior to that time. We like to have four people bring snacks at each meeting so that it doesn’t put the burden on one or two people. Please contact Karen Turner by phone 252-294-8046 or via email at pestmum@yahoo.com to volunteer.
