Join us on Sunday April 14, 2019 for the last Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club meeting of the season. We meet at Sanibel Community House at 2:00pm for refreshments and meet-and-greet, then at 2:15pm our guest speaker begins.
Rebecca Mensch of the Bailey-Matthew National Shell Museum will present her unparalleled research on live Junonia collected during a 4-day research cruise to the deep Gulf of Mexico offshore of western Florida.
Rebecca’s “Search for the Live Junonia” will be a fun and eye-catching presentation that documents the lengths (and depths) to which one must go to find a live specimen of this renowned mollusk. You will see photos and videos of these amazing animals and find out what research has been done and is still underway at the museum.
Have you ever wanted to know more about those elusive Junonias that sometimes wash up on our beaches? What do these mollusks look like when alive? What do they eat? The program at the Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club’s last meeting ofthe season will answer many of the questions about them.
We’re thrilled to hear first-hand from Rebecca about the feeding habits and behaviors of our favorite coveted Sanibel shell, the Junonia. Rebecca will explain why it is rare to find a Junonia shell on Sanibel beaches (hint: they live in really deep water).
Join us for the talk!
