July 8th Meet & Greet

Are you in SW Florida this July? If so, please plan to meet up with your fellow Shell Club members for our July “Meet and Greet.” This month’s mini field trip will take place at Sanibel Seashells (Seashells.com) at 1544 Periwinkle Way.  We will meet on Thursday, July 8th at 9.00 a.m. in the rear car park on Fitzhugh St.

Larry Strange and his family have been running this store since 1988.  It was established in 1942 and is the oldest shell shop on Sanibel Island.

Larry will show us some of the treasures at his premises such as the delightful shell-themed dollhouse that was featured in the 2021 Virtual Sanibel Shell Show, as well as the beautiful Sailors’ Valentine that was created by David Rhyne and featured in Pam Boynton’s book  Contemporary Sailors’ Valentines – Romance Revisited. Larry will also tell you of his world travels to find rare and exotic shells plus other marine species.

REPEATING SOME OF THESE EVENTS DURING SEASON

For those of you who live elsewhere during the summer months, it is planned to repeat some of these mini field trips during the upcoming winter, like the Shell Museum and Sanibel Seashells trips. Stay tuned for more info later in the year.

JUNE’S MEET & GREET

Last month’s Meet & Greet was at the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum. It was attended by 30 Shell Club members including many new faces. It was a great chance to meet Museum Director Sam Ackerson and hear his vision for the museum. Science Director and Curator Dr. José Leal led the group into the research area of the museum and explained his current research projects.
