Our upcoming San-Cap Shell Club Meeting will be on Sunday Nov 11 at 2pm at Bailey-Matthew National Shell Museum.
The new meeting format we began this season has been well-received. We start at 1:45pm with refreshments and mingling, then launch into the guest speaker’s presentation, followed by our monthly Shell Club business meeting, and end with a fun raffle for door prizes.
Our November guest speaker is Travis Mellett, from the University of South Florida College of Marine Science. Travis is this year’s recipient of the $12,000.00 Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club/Mary and Al Bridell Memorial Fellowship. This is the second year in a row that he has been chosen for this award. His presentation is titled “What is biogeochemistry and how can it be used to understand human impacts on shelled organisms?”
This month, we’ll also feature a silent auction with shells and shell-related articles that will begin at 1:45. The November program by Travis Mellett will begin at 2:00 PM. Following Travis’s presentation, there will be another opportunity to bid on the silent auction items before the brief business meeting.
Remember, we can’t take credit cards for silent auction items (or membership dues), but we can take a check or cash.
Here is a peek at some of the Shell Club silent auction items up for offer at our November meeting. There is no data for any of these larger shells and some of them are damaged, but they can be displayed with their damage hidden. There will also be smaller shells with data to bid on, for instance, a set of five different species of wentletraps.
Also, there may be some glass domes or cloches in the silent auction. These would be great for your entries for the Shell Show this coming March.
Hope to see everyone there! Contact us with any questions.
Will there be any cone shells up for auction?
Thanks for your question. Yes, there will be a group of three cones in the silent auction on Sunday, Nov 11 2018 at 1:45pm. See you there!
