2019 Fossil Dig Field Trip

submitted by Susi Butler:

We all met at the fossil quarry on Sunday (after a long drive!) and led by Roger Portell, our guide, all 23 of us began our hunt for 3 million year old fossil shells !

All of us were chatting and exclaiming over each other’s finds and pictures were taken !

After 3 hours, we left with our buckets full of fossil shells to check into the hotel.

We had our own room at the restaurant, a delicious dinner and Roger talked about our next day at the museum.   We enjoyed a 3 hour tour of their facility and got to see their behind-the-scenes work and their huge inventory of shells which was amazing !   Roger then took us over to the Florida Natural History museum and he gave us a tour of the Florida Fossils Hall with lots shells, etc.  By 12:30 we all left with smiles on our faces and more educated about our wonderful shell world !!

I have to say that Roger was an outstanding guide and very happy to share his knowledge with us and that made it even more enjoyable !    I hope we can work with him again sometime !
