 Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club Grant Program

Grant funds awarded by the Sanibel Shell Club are intended to assist graduate students, post-doctoral researchers and supervised third or fourth-year undergraduate students doing research to enhance our knowledge of mollusk life history, environment, culture, etc. in a marine, freshwater, or terrestrial environment in southwest Florida or should relate to conservation and water quality efforts related to the local Gulf of Mexico.

Grant funding is intended to further the mission of the SCSC which is to promote the study of mollusks. The Club was formed to exchange information in the field of conchology and malacology, to foster public education and intelligent conservation, and to encourage and support studies and research activities in those fields.

Funds may be used for a broad range of items, from assisting with project expenses, such as supplies, equipment, books or other costs associated with carrying out a project, to aiding an established project already underway.

The Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club (SCSC) annual grant program is intended to further the Mission of the SCSC which is to promote the study of mollusks. The SCSC was formed to exchange information in the field of conchology and malacology, to foster public education and intelligent conservation, and to encourage and support studies and research activities in those fields.

Program Eligibility

The SCSC invites students, and non-profit organizations and schools, to submit applications for grants based on funding availability. Generally, if grant applications are deemed complete and viable, funding amounts between $1,000 to $5,000 per grant application per year are awarded.

Grants are awarded to enhance our knowledge of the life history, culture, environment, etc. of mollusks in a marine, freshwater, or terrestrial environment in southwest Florida. Grant projects may also relate to conservation, and water quality efforts, related to the Gulf of Mexico.

Student grants are intended to assist graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and supervised third or fourth-year undergraduate students conducting research.

SCSC grant funds may be used for a broad range of items:

 • Assisting with project expenses, (e.g., supplies, equipment, books, or other costs associated with carrying out a project)

• Aiding established projects that are already underway

• Pay travel expenses to present research results at local, national, or international meetings.

SCSC grant funds may be used alone or in combination with project funding from other sources.

Application Submission

Applicants must submit a written application to the designated Grants Chairperson of the SCSC, via email, no later than the deadline date indicated below.

Application Deadline

The deadline for submitting applications for the SCSC 2024 Grant Program is October 15, 2024.

Grant application review and decision is generally on the agenda for the Board meeting of the SCSC in November, with confirmation anticipated by December 31, 2024.

Application Package

All applications for the SCSC 2024 Grant Program must include:

  1. Name of person making the application
  2. Mailing address
  3. Telephone number
  4. E-mail address
  5. Name of organization or school
  6. Address of organization of school
  7. Amount requested
  8. Brief project summary in 3 sentences or less.
  9. Project budget
  10. Project timeline. If the research project has not started yet, please indicate anticipated start and completion dates.
  11. Detailed project description including the project location, how long it has been in development or worked on, and how it relates to the furtherance of the SCSC Mission noted above. Please indicate exactly how the SCSC grant funds will be spent to help accomplish the project’s goal.
  12. Non-profit status letter for your Organization.
  13. Level of current year’s academic study, (i.e., undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral)
  14. Anticipated date and year of degree completion
  15. Name, title, email address, and telephone number of research advisor
  16. Brief letter of recommendation from your advisor

 Report of Accomplishment

Grant recipients shall submit a brief written report to the SCCS no later than November 1, 2025. This report should indicate how the funds were used and how they helped to accomplish the goals of the grant project. Further funding will not be considered if the recipient has not submitted the “Report of Accomplishment” in a timely manner. The report should include some descriptive information about the project and should indicate what information in the report is permissible to be printed in the SCSC monthly newsletter without infringing upon the researcher’s intention of publishing it firstly elsewhere, such as in a scientific journal.
