ARTISTIC DIVISION
Please let me introduce myself. My name is Linda Friedrich, (pronounced Free-drick), and I am honored to serve as the Artistic Division Chair for the 2026 Show. I have exhibited in the Artistic Division for the past two years and have been fortunate to earn two Second Place ribbons! I have also served as the Publicity Chair for the Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club for the past five years and still currently hold that position. In my former life, I ran National Marketing Programs for a Fortune 100 Company for 34 years where I designed, wrote and produced brochures, advertisements, flyers, ad campaigns and conferences. I will use all that experience to try to enable you to exhibit your best creations easily and enjoy the entire Sanibel Shell Show adventure!
We’ve made some changes to this year’s Artistic Division categories. Some classes were eliminated due to a low number of entries and others were consolidated into combined classes. Please review these revisions carefully prior to completing your entry form. Additionally, please pay specific attention to the definitions in each of the class. Please note that an exhibit entry that was initially submitted to the Sanibel Shell Show in a Hobbyist Class will be automatically changed to a Professional Class if that same exhibit is entered in another Florida shell show and wins at that respective show’s Professional level.
- Flower arrangements – the hobbyist classes were consolidated into one class versus five separate ones
- Flower arrangements – the professional classes were consolidated into two classes versus five separate ones
- Miniature Sailor’s Valentines – the two hobbyist classes for miniature sailor’s valentines were consolidated into one class
- Sailor’s Valentines – the number of professional classes was reduced to align with a low number of entries in select classes.
- The MISCELLANEOUS Class will still exist for an entry not applying to any of the other classes.
Please note: if you choose to provide an explanation placard next to your entry, please be sure the total size of this document, including the frame, is no larger than 4” x 6”. Any frame/document combination not meeting the 4” x 6” requirement will be removed from the exhibit prior to judging.
Please ensure all Exhibit Height, Width, Depth measurements are accurate and followed for each category as well as easel dimensions, if your category requires an easel.
Fully completed, legible entry forms will be accepted in the order received. Addresses for submitting can be found on the entry forms. The Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club reserves the right to limit the number of items per exhibitor if entries exceed the available space. All entry forms must be received by February 1, 2026. Entries in both the Artistic and Scientific Divisions will no longer be accepted once the available exhibition space has been exceeded. For specific information and rules for the Artistic Division, see page 8.
Show entries must be brought to the Sanibel Community House and set up on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm. Exhibit judging is conducted all day Wednesday, March 4, 2026; exhibitors are not permitted to be on-site. All exhibits must be removed on Saturday, March 7, 2026, between 4:15 pm and no later than 6:00 pm. The judges for the 2026 Sanibel Shell Show Artistic Division are Kirsti Scott and Kathy Hofstad. The traditional Judges and Awards Reception will be held at the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum and Aquarium on Wednesday, March 4, 2026. The doors will open at 5:00 pm. Reservations are required to attend the reception. The reservation form can be found on the last page of this document.
The Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club is happy to continue its rich history of delivering a quality shell show for the public, exhibitors, vendors and club members. It is through the efforts of many dedicated volunteers that we achieve the show’s success. In addition to being an exhibitor at the show, please consider volunteering your time during the setup or show days. There are many different volunteer roles and time slots available to suit your interests and availability. We so appreciate your entries in the 2026 Sanibel Shell Show and are looking forward to working alongside you at the show!

PLEASE NOTE THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
APPLICATIONS
A PHOTOGRAPH OF EACH ENTRY IS REQUIRED. AN APPLICATION WITHOUT A PHOTOGRAPH OF EACH ENTRY WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED NOR SPACE RESERVED IN YOUR NAME. Please include a photograph of your exhibit(s) with your name and exhibit class written on the back of each so we can complete the application process and confirm that your space in the show has been reserved. Photographs are used solely to determine if the exhibit is in the correct class.
The deadline for receiving Artistic applications is February 1, 2026.
PRESENTATION OF AWARDS
To promote the highest quality at the Sanibel Shell Show, all awards, except “People’s Choice,” will only be given if the judges determine an entry is deserving of a given award because of quality and content. An exhibit entered as the sole contender within a given class must fulfill the parameters of a high-quality exhibit, in the judges’ opinion, in order to win a First Place award in that class. Likewise, if there are only two exhibits within a class, it does not guarantee a First Place and Second Place winner.
ARTISTIC DIVISION
APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED VIA EMAIL OR TRADITIONAL MAIL
DRAPING: Cloth draped on an easel or riser is not permitted. Arranging the exhibits for presentation and judging often necessitates moving them. Draping makes this very difficult, if not impossible, to do.
OCTAGON SHADOWBOX: All shell art created in an octagonal wooden shadowbox under glass will be considered a Sailor’s Valentine.
LOOSE SAND IN OR AROUND AN EXHIBIT IS PROHIBITED!
- An exhibitor may enter more than one class, but no more than one entry per class.
- Complete entry applications are accepted on a space-available basis. They will be accepted in the order in which they are received. It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to select the appropriate entry class. Entry class may not be changed after the Application Due Date except with approval of the Division Chairperson.
- The contents of each exhibit must be the property of the exhibitor – no borrowed specimens or art pieces. When an exhibit is a collaboration, the names of all exhibitors must appear on the entry form.
- As judging is anonymous, the exhibitor’s name or photos of themselves must not be visible on any exhibit until after judging is completed. This is especially pertinent to the artist’s name or initials on individual artistic exhibit items.
- Exhibitors shall check in and set up exhibits at the Sanibel Community House, 2340 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel, Florida, between the hours of 9am and 4pm on Tuesday, March 3, 2026. Each exhibitor is responsible for bringing their own carts and obtaining his/her own help for carrying in his/her own exhibit(s). Immediately after setting up exhibits, exhibitors must exit the building unless he/she is working with a chairperson of the Shell Show. If an exhibitor cannot check in until after 4pm, the exhibitor must make special arrangements with the Division Chairperson to check in later.
- Arrangement and exact placement of exhibits will be determined by Shell Show Officials and not by exhibitors. Accordingly, no exhibitor shall move or otherwise handle another’s exhibit. Exhibitors may not handle their own exhibits while the show is open to the public without express permission from the Shell Show Chairpersons.
- During the show, no exhibit or portion thereof, may be removed. Anyone removing an exhibit prior to the show closing will be excluded from exhibiting in future shell shows.
- Exhibitors must remove all exhibits between the hours of 4:15 pm and 6:00 pm on Saturday, March 7, 2026. Please note the 4:15 pm time. We allow 15 minutes to clear the public and exhibitors for an orderly takedown. Exhibitors must inform Shell Show Chairpersons if someone other than the exhibitor is removing their exhibit. Shell Show Chairpersons will remove exhibits not removed by 6:00 pm. Exhibitor will then be responsible for retrieval of his/her exhibit. Exhibitors are responsible for bringing their own carts and obtaining their own help with carrying their exhibit(s).
- Evaluation of the merits of exhibits and the distribution of awards is solely the responsibility of the judges, whose decisions will be final. Awards in each class will be given only to the extent that the judges determine exhibits are of sufficient merit.
- Noncompetitive exhibits may be entered in the show with the permission of and at the sole discretion of the Division Chairperson. They will be allowed only on a space-available basis with priority always given to competitive exhibits.
- Suggestions or complaints concerning the show must be directed to the Shell Show Chairperson only. Any unsportsmanlike conduct on the part of any exhibitor will be discussed at the next meeting of the Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club Board of Directors and appropriate action will be taken, including possible expulsion from future shows for a minimum of one year or perhaps longer.
- DISCLAIMER POLICY: Exhibitor agrees and recognizes the Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club and/or the Sanibel Community House shall not, under any circumstances, be responsible for damage to or loss of the exhibitor’s or vendor’s property. This includes, but is not limited to exhibits, items for sale, and personal property of the exhibitor or his/her staff or guests. It includes losses of every nature including, but not limited to damage, destruction, and theft. The exhibitor acknowledges having been advised to obtain insurance to cover such potential losses.
- Unsigned or incomplete entry forms will not be processed.
Artistic Division Rules – Applicable to Artistic Division Exhibits Only
- All artistic exhibit tables are 2 feet 6 inches (30 inches) deep, front to back.
- Cloth/fabric draped on an easel or riser is not permitted. Arranging the exhibits for presentation and judging often necessitates moving them. Draping makes this very difficult, if not impossible, to do.
- Exhibits must be entirely the work of the exhibitor. No kits allowed nor are exhibits which were prepared in a classroom setting or with an instructor’s assistance / guidance. When an exhibit is a collaboration, the names of all exhibitors must appear on the entry form.
- Exhibitors will provide the following: any needed easel, stand, etc. for tabletop exhibits; wall hung exhibits must be on a sturdy tabletop easel due to the nature of the exhibit hall and a 12-foot extension cord for electric exhibits. Easels and stands must be sturdy and in good repair.
- Sailor’s Valentines must be displayed on a secure stand or easel.
- A Tabletop easel or secure stand is required for many exhibit categories. No Tabletop easel or stand should exceed 15 inches in depth or 4 inches wider or 2 inches higher than the exhibit being displayed. No exhibits will be allowed to hang on walls during the 2026 show. Cloth/fabric draped on an easel or riser is prohibited.
- Exhibits must consist mainly of shells and/or other sea life except Classes 60 (Hobbyist multimedia), 61 (Hobbyist photography), 83 (Professional multimedia), and 84 (Professional photography) that do not allow actual shells, and Classes 46 (Hobbyist shell-related needlecraft) & 71 (Professional shell-related needlecraft) that do not require shells. Exhibits in Classes 46, 60, 61, 71, 83, and 84 must have a shell theme as their primary content.
- A professional exhibitor is one who has sold, or offered for sale, his/her work through galleries, shops, shows, at home or any other outlets, whether he/she has a tax number and regardless of total sales volume/income. Please make sure to read this rule carefully and enter the correct division.
- Exhibits without dimensions on the entry form will NOT be accepted. Make sure they are on your entry form.
- An exhibit that received any ribbon or award at a previous Sanibel Shell Show is ineligible as a competitive exhibit in any subsequent Sanibel Shell Show.
- A professional exhibitor may exhibit in a hobbyist class provided the exhibit is a medium that is substantially and clearly different from the exhibitor’s professional medium or media. For example: One who has made and either offered for sale, or sold, sailor’s valentines, mosaics, jewelry, flowers, and/or other shell related craftwork must be in a professional class for ALL shell-related craftwork categories. However, he/she may enter his/her photographs or needlework in a hobbyist class if they have never sold, or offered for sale, any photographs or needlework.
- A PHOTOGRAPH OF EACH ENTRY IS REQUIRED. An application without a photograph of each entry will not be accepted or space reserved in your name. Please include a photograph of your exhibit(s) with your name and exhibit class written on the back of each so we can complete the application process and confirm that your space in the show has been reserved. Photographs are used solely to determine if the exhibit is in the correct class.
- NO SHOW RULE: If for some reason you will not be exhibiting all the entries listed on your entry form, you must contact the Artistic Chairperson on or before February 2, 2026, and identify the exhibits being withdrawn. Likewise, you must contact the Artistic Chairperson if you are not going to participate in the show at all. Should you fail to send notification by the deadline that you are not bringing all the exhibits listed on your entry form or you are not going to participate in the show, you will be considered a “No-Show” and will be issued a “No-Show Warning.” A second “No-Show Warning” will result in a restriction that will prevent you from entering the show for a period of one year.
- Exhibit Description Placard is limited to a total of 4″ x 6″ INCLUDING THE FRAME IF IT IS FRAMED. A placard exceeding this size will be removed and will not be a part of the exhibit during or after judging. – NO EXCEPTIONS.
