2020/2021 Meetings and Lecturers

April 11, 2021 Monthly Club Meeting

The presentation for our final Shell Club meeting of the 2020-21 season was delivered by Jaime Rogers (USF) via Zoom. Jaime presented an update on his PhD research (partially funded by a 2019 Sanibel Shell Club grant) comparing fossil oysters to modern oysters in Tampa Bay and how he believes human impacts have caused this change.

Jaime Rogers is a PhD student in the applied anthropology program at the University of South Florida. His dissertation work integrates historical ecology and archaeology to investigate the human-environmental relationship in Tampa Bay, Florida from 500 BCE to present.

March 14, 2021 Monthly Club Meeting

Morgan Tomlin was the speaker for our March virtual monthly meeting. She is an undergraduate student at University of South Florida working with Dr. Greg Herbert, and is a Sanibel Shell Club 2019 grantee. Morgan provided an update on the USF research on the life history traits of the Florida Horse Conch, including how long they live.  Populations in west Florida are declining and this study will help determine what level of commercial harvest is sustainable.

February 14, 2021 Monthly Club Meeting

[This vide has been temporarily removed but will be restored as soon as possible]

Rewatch the fascinating travel video by Joyce Matthys chronicling a shell collecting trip with the Shell Club to Chub Cay in the Bahamas several years ago. Anyone who knows Joyce won’t be surprised by her unbelievable video footage of live mollusks in their shells along with other marine creatures found in the warm shallow waters of the Bahamas. Both highly educational and visually stunning, this month’s Zoom meeting presentation was well-received and greatly appreciated.
